"Controversial" would be to understate the intent and impact of Bully, the latest half-hour return by a fraught Kanye West, arriving after a noncommittal flurry of takedowns, renamings, and scheduling confusions between it and several other projects. Sonically, Ye leans back on the sparse, soul-sampling minimalism and autotuned vocals of 808s & Heartbreak, and the record's brevity works in its favour. Nor does Ye fail to attract an (albeit shorter) guestlist of collaborators in the ilk of Playboi Carti, Ty Dolla $ign, and Quentin Miller. But its antisemitic rhetoric and flirtations with extremist imagery - and the much-debated use (and later removal) of AI-generated vocals - all cast a long, dehumanising shadow over its release. Beautiful in places, ultimately a cultural nail bomb.
