Brooklyn soul man Aaron Frazer has spent the last few years perfecting a sort of modern retro-soul alchemy alongside the ever-reliable Colemine Records crew, and this latest 45 lands very sweetly indeed. 'It's A Shame' pairs Frazer's instantly recognisable falsetto with the beautifully crisp rhythm section of Finnish deep soul specialists Cold Diamond & Mink, all tight drums, rich string swells and little melodic turns that feel impossible not to hum back afterwards. It's the kind of track that sounds expensive in the best possible way. On the flip, the mood softens considerably. The B-side drifts through bruised romance and quiet disappointment with a lovely, almost filmic sense of closure, like the final scene of some lost 70s drama fading slowly into the credits. Very classy stuff.
