Thirty years on, it remains remarkably strange for a global pop hit. Jay Kay glides across bouncing basslines and gleaming Rhodes arrangements with irritating charisma, while the groove itself never stops twitching and mutating beneath him. 'Do You Know Where You're Coming From' goes further into sophisticated acid jazz territory through restless percussion and rich harmonic movement, then 'Bullet' adds a tougher funk bite. Some records become trapped by nostalgia, but this one still sounds futuristic.
