'No, No, No' caught Destiny's Child in twain between several girl-group identities (Columbia execs had pounced, and were eager to get releasing despite not settling on a name). The original number doesn't feature on this Beyonce-takeafter label, though: instead, we're treated to an r-&-bruk throwback with the Camdino Soul version by (shockingly, at first not credited to) remixers Jazzie B and Katt, London purveyors of the broken beat scene. Part 2 flips it sharper for a silken bass glider, Wyclef Jean stepping in with clipped drums and that now-signature staccato vocal delivery from Beyonce, recorded fast under pressure but landing with intent. Built from a New Jersey basement demo and nearly passed to Brandy, the track ends up defining the group's early direction instead, charting high on both sides of the Atlantic and setting the ensuing tone of pop-r&b entirely.
