Leeds producer kidkanevil and collaborator Magic Manfred continue their Above The Clouds project with another warm and sharply executed hip-hop missive for First Word. 'One For Detroit' kicks things off in fine style, serving up dusty boom-bap drums and woozy keys that nod towards late 90s underground rap without sounding trapped in revivalism. Detroit producer 14KT flips the track on the reverse into something tougher and more low-slung, adding extra MPC crunch and heavier bass pressure while keeping the original's hazy warmth intact. To round things off, 'U3P1' featuring Paolo De Jesus drifts into softer territory via jazz-flecked chords with laid-back grooves and subtle electronic detail.
