In a sideways, time-signatured move through familiar material, Japanese trio Nautilus take on 'Empire State Of Mind' and Jazzanova's 'Mwela, Mwela (Here I Am)' for a 7" single tied to Oonops' Agogo compilation series. The former sheds its original vocal grandeur in favour of tight, instrumental interplay, keys, bass and drums circling the melody with a slightly overdriven, rare groove edge - tempos shifting in sudden flashbacks or plot twists. The flip-do of 'Mwela, Mwela' (from Jazzanova's 2002 In Between LP) indulges a rarer bossa nova occasion for the band - the palette comparatively centred and deep, an atoll of bass and harmony compared to the A's light register.
