Few albums in hip-hop carry the weight or intimacy of J Dilla's Donuts. Pieced together from his hospital bed in Los Angeles and released in 2006, it distills a lifetime of beat-making into 31 fragments of rhythm and feeling. Each track is brief but looping just long enough to blur memory and repetition into something meditative. 'Workinonit' flips guitar riffs into bursts of euphoria while 'Time: The Donut of the Heart' feels like an elegy disguised as a groove. Dilla built Donuts without rappers but it speaks more clearly than most voices ever could. It's a collage of soul, funk and heartbreak that changed how hip-hop could feel. Nineteen years later, the pulse still sounds alive.
