The fifth album from Cheshire's The 1975 sees them distilling their sound into something tighter and more direct. A streamlined alt-pop record, Being Funny In A Foreign Language finds Matty Healy and co immersed in a set of radio-friendly songs that largely circle themes of love, as is often the case. The razor-sharp production from Jack Antonoff, known for his work with Taylor Swift, ensures these tracks land with real impact. The polished, funk-leaning 'Happiness' is packed with bright hooks, sax flourishes and a propulsive bassline that anchors the track's glossy feel. Where The 1975 succeed here is in the self-effacing, slightly serrated edge that sits beneath the surface. Being Funny In A Foreign Language draws heavily from 80s pop, but also places the band's persona under scrutiny. "Am I ironically woke?" Healy asks on 'Part Of The Band', "or am I just some post-coke, average, skinny bloke?" That kind of self-awareness runs throughout, touching on identity, excess and uncertainty, and giving the album a reflective undercurrent. When not leaning fully into pop, the band branch out stylistically. The folk-pop of 'Wintering' nods towards the warmth of Chris Rea's 'Driving Home For Christmas', filtered through a more contemporary, kitchen-sink lens. On 'About You', they blend their melodic instincts with the sweeping string arrangements of Warren Ellis and layers of shoegaze-style reverb. Beneath Antonoff's polish, this is the sound of a band refining their identity, even as they continue to question it.
