Tokyo groove trio Nautilus sharpen their tangy run of 7"s with 'Shy Guy' b/w 'Mystic Voyage', furthering their blend of jazz-funk, soul and rare groove with yet another ritzily reworked classic song. Here they spin Diana King's mid-90s hit 'Shy Guy' into a swaggering funk workout, with Okinawan singer Emi Tawata inspiriting the vocal with a punchy new edge. On the flip, 'Mystic Voyage' channels Lonnie Liston Smith's spiritual jazz into Nautilus' trademark bass-driven strut. Pressed in Japan on their own imprint, Natuilus' is a cottage industry kept tight from bow to stern, one that is well worth paying attention to.
